Digging into the Song of Songs
Song of Songs hey! Um... juicy!...
A little background. Digging into the Song of Songs is something I've been messing around with , it's not a translation as such though may appear so. The idea was simply to dig into the meaning of the Song of Songs a little more via the Hebrew to see what I could find. I'll post something on how I've done this latter - it's actually very simple but not a short explanation - but very simply Hebrew has 3 letter root words from which not just all words literally spring out from but inherit their root meaning.
In practice Hebrew is very verb orientated but the same root word would have the expression of what we'd call verbs (action) , nouns (naming) and adjective (descriptive). It's then a case of swapping around the verbal and noun meanings for an adjective. We'd say that would give anything any different meaning but it doesn't in Hebrew which is best described as unique, certainly in this respect.
There are some staggering findings. Given a basic understanding of what is meant it actually became surprisingly easy to do this and find the correct word from a more specific list of generealy what is 3 or 4 words or terms that a root word in Hebrew means.
A simple way to interpret the Song that actually makes it make sense is it's a journey of maturity of love that can both be translated as being specific about how a future bride is to love her groom and the love that that groom has for his for future bride and how to love God and how God love us. This is a rather foreign idea actually biblically and more so with this book of the Bible, it just seems sometimes when we read it like babbling nonsense.
However if you understand Hebrew and understand how to draw out of Hebrew meaning this is a very smooth and natural process. In what I've done I've picked the term or word that best draws out this meaning. When you mechanically translate Hebrew into English the English doesn't read as well as it could and is to us clunky, however when you correct that you loose some of the meaning in the original Hebrew - this is a big problem for all translators. What I've done is first kept the clunky-ness to bring out the meaning, secondly I've added a near or other alternative (mostly figurative or literal) than the one I've chosen to help with that and lastly there's not much need for further "commentary" to bring out the meaning but in a few places I've done this to do so. I hope you enjoy!
Song of Songs
Chapter 1
1 The song [meaning “express thoughts in poetic form”] of songs [alt: the greatest song in the word, ever!!! Or the covering of coverings], which directs you to wholeness.
2
Let him passionion [alt:kindle,heat] me with the passion [alt:kindling, burning] of his progeny [blossoming]—
For your love is better than the pressed out grapes [fig: that is the delicacies of this world].
3
Because of the grinding into aromatic particles [aroma, related to flow] of your growing fat [energy],
Your breath is that aroma poured out [related to flow - regardomning the grooms character];
Purely do they love you.
4
Draw me and lift me away!
We will run [chase] after you.
The king has enclosed me.
We will be led by the hand and rejoice [exult] in you.
We will remember your love more than pressed out grapes.
Up-Rightly do they love you.
I am drunk & intoxicated, but fitting [attaining to],
O pure seed of wholeness,
Like a radiation in all directions [fig: growing house] that is obscured,
Like the restriction of wholeness.[fig: the value within cannot be seen from outside]
6
Do not experience me, because I am drunk and intoxicated,
Because the sunrise [or sun] has penetrated me.
Where I grew up, the life givers [implication is bothers - meaning strong protection - due to the odd use of the term mothers sons rather than straightforward brothers implication is they were doing the opposite.. hence ] were burning with anger at me.
They made me the protector of their body [entwined nourishment].
But the twinning of my own body I have not kept.
Make known, you whom my soul loves,
Where you nurture [pasture, feed] Where you rest within the strong illumination [strength] of the day [fig: like oil]. For why should I exist separated by veiling [cover; negative use - in terms of sin - as opposed to the covering that is ChaNaH - building rather than A(y)T(et)aH] herself by separation] among those who give honour?
If you do not know, O beautiful among women,
Go forth in the footsteps of the multitude [note: different root word used here for flock],
And tend your separating pieces
Upon the shepherds’ [action is tending] covering [abide].
I have compared you, my companion,
To my swift among disarranging [also loosen] enlargement
10
Your support [refreshing strengthening] is beautiful with exploring and purposeful teaching [impl: that is ordered],
Your moving up with arrangement [impl:ordering, probably to protect - note no mention of gold - lit the picture is a string of beads].
11
We will make you purposeful with illumination
With isolated marks of longing [yearning].
12
While the regal advisor is surrounding,
My overpowering scent sends forth its fragrance [aroma].
13
A bitter herb is my beloved to me,
That abides within the darkness and nourishes me.
14
My beloved is to me the gathering of covering
In the entwined body of the emerging conflict.
15
Behold, you are beautiful, my companion
Behold, you are beautiful!
You have pure springs [note: the use of “en” in en gedi and “eye” is the same hebrew word ayin - connecting the conflict to the emerging springs].
16
Behold, you are handsome, my beloved!
Yes, pleasing!
Also our forcibly holding [cradling] is renewed [fresh, fig: like fresh grass].
17
The causing [also meeting] of our houses [protection, containing] is solidifying [imp;: foundational as in stable], enclosing and holding together preventing breaking.
Chapter 2
I am the blossoming sign of separation,
The veiled rejoicing and blossoming spirit.
2
Like a 6 leafed rose with thorns [That blooms, rejoices and moves]
is my darling among the young virgins.
3
Like the breathe among the surrounding darkness and hived among all the people [fig: adam, meaning mankind, is pictured as a thick forest]
is my beloved among the young men.
I delight to sit in his provision and protection,
and his actions are pleasant to my palate (with sense of waiting - like an ambush [also wilderness (experience)]
4
He has brought me, and I came into, His House, and his pressing [picture of the “pressing of the wine”] and his banner over me was love.
5
Sustain me [so that I may] seek to be established [founded],
spread me with your breathe [Spirit],
for I am weak [sick] with love.
6
His left [implied either hand or arm though this is not strictly in the text] is placed below [supporting] my [implication is “weak” due to the comparison of left and right] beginning [start],
and his right [implication is strength] draws me close.
7
By The seed and purity of Jerusalem [shooting or founding of wholeness I direct you [root goes back to the number “7”]
by the beauty [that is distinguished beauty] and by the leading of the production:
Do not absorb an external impulse [literally the same root word is used for both whht is translated as both “awaken” and “arouse”] until love is adorned.
8
The voice[ or sound] [of] beloved!
Behold [ety: presenting a new idea!] This one comes [in or enters, lit: walks into the picture],
Scaling a height and implanting [conceiving],
Drawing together the ground [imp: mankind] elevating [imp: related to height].
9
My beloved is the most beautiful yet the most earthly.
Behold! This one stands [in preparation to act] behind our restricting wall,
Blossoming, pierching [making complete],
Permeating [enveloping] 10
My beloved spoke and said to me,
“Gather to me, my companion,
my beautiful one, to walk [come] with me.
11
See the dark season is gone [lit: it has been gathered together and has gone to protect from loss];
the rains [alt: torrents - that cause her to grow] are passed through, over and gone.
12
Blossoming appears on the earth;
the season of covering [singing] can be touched,
The sound of purposeful searching
is heard in our land.
13
The pressing together puts forth [lit: embalms] its early growth;
The entwined body blossoms, spreads and gives out it’s fragrance.
Stand up, walk, my darling;
my beautiful one,walk with me.
14
My pure [one] in concealment of pressure,
in covering [impl:womb] within the precipice [steep place] [impl:weighty],
show me your appearance [see your sight],
let me hear your voice;
for your voice is pleasant,
and your face is beauty.
15
Catch for us the striving [longing],
the little striving
that ruin the body,
the body that has tender blossoms.
16
My beloved is mine and I am his;
he tends [his flock] among the lilies.
17
Until breathes the day [imp: as the sun stops scorching]
and the outside stimuli flee,
Turn around, my beloved,
and be like to me beauty
or earthly
on the breaking of continuity of separation [impl: parts of the sacrifice]
Chapter 3
In my rest [death] on the mixed day I sought the unknown but did not find Him
2
I will awake and establish and go about the terror & darkness,
through its routes [lit:legs] and widenings;
I will seek [the unknown] the one love.
I sought for him but did not find.
3
The men that watch the darkness, I asked them
“Did you see the one?”
4
The lesson to pass through
when I found [attained] the one love.
I grasped him and would not weaken
till I had brought him back home to the point of departure,
to the surrounding of the conception.
5

6
Who is this one ascending [climbing] from the wholeness
like a palm tree [figuratively the firm pillar that shoots up and then spreads out supporting like a column] of destruction,
Perfumed [fig: aroma of the sacrifice] with the bitter perfume and purity
With all [whole] the annointings [fig:drops] that can be sold?
7
Behold! It is the complete one bearing the sin,
escorted by sixty
[note the Hebrew is spelt shin shin - the letter for Sh being the two front teeth that devour - this is the same root meaning as the six leaved rose at the beginning of ch 2 - implies creation (number of man) - layering and the double shin process]
Those who have overcome around Him, the overcomers of Israel [he who prevails].
8
All [whole] grasping the sword [fig: ruin],
Taught [practically & morally] to fight,
All men with his sword on there extremity,
prepared for the terrors of the night [same word used for Bride’s experience before].
9
The King of wholeness made Himself a covering forming purity;
10
Its stands on longing,
its spread [foundation] of brightness.
Seated and woven with Kingship and Sacrifice,
from it’s ts midst it is fitted together with love for the
Daughters of Jerusalem,
11 come out,
and look, you daughters of fulfillment [completeness].
The King of wholeness encircled with a crown,
the crown at which the point departed
in the light of his tying together for mutual satisfaction,
the day of rejoicing in His inner man.
Look and see how beautiful you are, my companion! Look and see how beautiful!
You spring forth [impl: of flow - displaying mental capabilities] behind your covering is pure.
Your storming rain and sweeping whirlwind is like a gathering of strength [impl:like stronghold] winnowing [emptying as you descend] and breaking [the surface, as you stand up] to reveal yourself.
2
Your sharp tearing in two are like a gathering cut, then shaped, then
ascending from your purifying.
Fitting perfectly; nothing of you is robbed or barren

Seeds crowd and divide what you lack from within your covering

Establishing authority with numerous protections,
On which Hangs your whole protection by strength.
5
Repeating productions, repeating like earth.
Fitting covering among the repetition [lit: x 3, alt: cycles].
6
Until the light rises and the darkness sets,
I will go to the breaking through of bitterness
And the uncovering of purity.
7
You are all and whole beauty, my companion; without stain or blemish.
8
Come with me together from purity, my complete bride [word bride derived from word “complete”],

Start with serving, sweeping away from tending the vineyard,
from the dwelling take and hold
and the breaking through of the cutting down.
9
You have conquered my heart, my protection, my bride;
Being one with one springing, one surrounding and support.
10
How right is your love, my protection, my bride!
How much more better is your beloved than pressed out grapes,
and the fragrance of your fatness / oil
more than all the sweet odours!
11
Distil [also prophecy] your flowing wave completed Bride;
Sweet words and foundational sustenance and honey are under your speech. Wrapped fragrance, wrapped purity.

16
Arise the hiding and come in uprightly [difference in left and right again - which is the same as north and south which is implied in the wind though not literally in the text.]
Breath out on my enclosed nourishment,

Chapter 5

Flowing [in a particular direction] from the pressed out grapes of my souring.
Eat, friends, and drink;
Drink friends, and drink while searching beloved ones.
2
I weakened but my understanding [inner man] is aroused.
He knocks [pounds] (note - this is the first stage of the 7 stage Hebrew wedding where the groom goes with his father to his future brides house and if the door is not opened there is no marriage)
The sound of my beloved.
“Open [break forth, loose self] to me, my protection, my companion,
my purity, my complete one.
My start [beginning] is full to abundance with falling dew [ that is cast out of heaven],
my awakening then replying with the stirring of the dew.”
3
I have removed and spread out — [aleph-tav] my cloak
How can I be covered [fig:clothed]?
I have washed thoroughly my steps [in walking the path, fig: also ending]—
Can I soil [defil] them?
4
My beloved thrust his power through the opening [whidening] and my inner man [understanding] cried aloud for him.
5
I arise to loosen [open] for my beloved,
and my power distilled [prophecy] with bitter aroma,
And my strong highlight with myrrh, passing over
on the anointing of the closing.
6
I opened [loosed] for my beloved,
but my beloved had turned away and passed over.
My inner man leaped forth sank as he spoke
I sought [the unknown]him but him I could not attain.
I cried aloud but he gave no response.
7
The men that watch for danger who go about the darkness found me
They wept and this wounded me;
they carried away my covering upward,
those preservers of the protection!
8
Pure Seed of wholesome, I swear [relates to 7]—
if you attain my beloved,
what you shall make known that I am weak [faint] with love
9
What is your beloved better than other beloved,
most beautiful of women?
What is your beloved more than any other beloved that you so charge us?
10
My beloved is white [light. Fig: pure] and red,
Beholden among tens of numerous.
11
His start is off purest light;
Awakened and repelling, He Branches out into the darkness, penetrating it.
12
His fountain is pure, containing refreshment, washed clean away by it’s contents and set full.
13
Engaged in positive activity thirsting for water, cut up
His competness is six layered
Distling bitter passing through.
14
His strength is repeating light
set with 6 layered mining.
His inwards, hidden causing a goal inlaid with telling
15
He strives to support plundering [of purity],
Founded on firm refined light
.
His appearance is like purity,
Chosen enclosed support.
16
His completeness is impacting and effective reason itself;
Every part of Him lovely.
This is my beloved, this is my friend,
Pure support of wholesomeness.
Chapter 6
Where has your beloved gone,
O fairest among women?
Where has your beloved turned towards,
That we may seek him with you?
2
My beloved has gone to his enclosed nourishment,
To the layered firsting of cut up aromas,
To nourish the enclosed nourishment,
And to bring to gather the six layered blossoming.
3
I am my beloved’s,
And my beloved is mine.
He nourishes among the six layered blossoming.
4
you are my companion as the acceptable favourite whom I was pleased with,
Beautiful as pure wholeness,
terrorising as [impl: “an army with”] a standard [note: that standard is love], your signal!
5
Turn your emerging away from me,
For it has overwhelmed me.
Your strorm and sweeping whildwind is like a gathering, concentrated to a goal sitting up and revealed.
6
Your sharp tearing in two are like a gathering to cut and shapen then
ascending from your purifying.
Fitting perfectly; nothing of you is robbed or barren
7
Like crowded seeds that have been separated
Thinned out behind your covering
8
There are numerous layers of regal advisors
And fat and corpulent [short] emerging obligations,
Numerous Hidden.
9
My pure, my complete one,
Is the one,
The only one [fig: dependent on] her who gives physical and spiritual life,
The pure, who brought her forth, beheld her
The strong protection saw her being called in successful progress [moving forward]
The regal advisor and the emerging obligations
And they praised her [lifted her, shone light on].
10
Who is the one who looks out [fig:shines] who looks forth pure as the illumination,
beautiful as the purity,
Clear as the light,
Terrifying to behold as those that bear a standard
I descended to the enclosed nourishment of removal [or fruit] of up standing
To observer the freshness of the winding stream in the valley
To see whether the intertwined body had budded
And the crowded seed had bloomed.
12
I was not even aware,
My soul had appointed me
As the widening of noble people.
13
Turn back, turn back [note: this is a request to stop what she is instructed to do by her beloved - in effect to distract her], O Wholesome one;
Turn back, turn back, that we may perceive you
Would you perceive in the wholesome one
As it were, the obliteration [or striking] of the two concealments?
Chapter 7
How beautiful are your steps [impl:ending] from which your movement stems,
Protection of the willing [fig: prince implies messiah]
The turning away of your base is complete by including everything,
The deed of the strength of faith [steady handed one].
2
Your concentrated strength [fig:umbilical cord] contains your cleansing and you are free of foreign objects;
It requires no consummation or melting.
Your womb (that surrounds the house of it’s seed) combines enclosed food [fruit] of the produce
Fenced in with six layered blossoming.
3
Your field producing human nourishment is earthly,
Marked out covering
4
Your connecting support is like a sharpening [focusing] cutting off,
Your merging like spurring prosperity [lit:blessing] leaping forward
By the limit of the raging storm of the pure support of many
Your enraged cutting of purifying
Which keeps watch toward the door of the rustling of the wind.
5
Your start founded and grounded upon the going forth of terraced nourishment of the entwined body,
And the conception of your start is like the weaving of royal sacrifice;
The regal advisor is held bound by your enclosure [fig; holding together].
6
How beautiful and how pleasing you are,
O love, in your beautiful bliss!
7
This firm height of yours is like a rising to heights,
And your nourishment like it’s gathering.
8
I said, “I will ascend to those heights,
I will take possession of the protrusions of it.”
Let now your nourishment be like gathering of the entwined body,
The odour of the expression of your inner feelings be blowing [fig: spirit breathed]
9
And the completing like pressed out grapes.
The pressed out grapes, the agreeable walks out uprightly for my beloved, chattering over the completion of darkening.
10
I am my beloved’s,
And his longing is toward me.
11
Walk with me my beloved,
Let us go forth to the protection;
Let us abide in protection.
12
Let us make an early start to the terraced nourishment;
Let us see if the entwined body has loosed and the cemented the relationship is surrounded and in bloom,
And the crowded seed there I will give [aleph - tav] my beloved love.
13
The beloved gives off a fragrance,
And at the entrance are all excellencies, fresh and stored,
Which I have hidden and treasured up for you, my beloved.
Chapter 8
Who will make you my protection.
Who fed and drank at my nourishment that gives life [physical and spiritual]!
If I should find you excluded,
I would mingle;
I would not despise.
2 I would lead you and bring you
Into the house of life,
To she [lit: the one who gives life, fig: wisdom, experience, beauty, grace, etc] who used to teach me.
I would cause you to drink of my pressed out mixed spice,
Pressed out from crowded seed.
3
Strength supports my head,
And weakness encloses me.
4
By The seed and purity of Jerusalem [shooting or founding of wholeness I direct you [root goes back to the number “7”]
Do not absorb an external impulse [literally the same root word is used for both what is translated as both “awaken” and “arouse”] until love is adorned.
5 Who is this one ascending from wholeness,
Supported by her beloved within the blowing spirit I woke you up and made my pledge to you;
There she [that is the spirit] birthed you.
6 Set me as an indelible stain upon your understanding,
As a indelible stain upon your strength;
For love is as strong as the end of life, severe as the grave.
Zeal are it’s flames [also figuratively can be translated as “bolt of lightening, arrow, flashes, the flaming”], a spark of nourishing flame, an intense flame within.
7 Many waters [can also be translated heavens] prevail not, nor extinguish love, and the streams [fig:flowing water] nor can wash it off.
If a man would set forth all the riches and wealth of his house for love in derision he would be derided,
8 We have a little protection,
And she has no nourishment.
How shall we accomplish her protection
In the illumination of when she is declared for?
9 If she is glowing hot ,
We will cause her to be grounded
An encampment of longing;
And if she is drawing up water,
We will enclose and confine her
With a flat surface [fig:foundation] to sustain her.
10 I am glowing,
And my nourishment is expanding
Then I became in his springing up
As one who attained wholeness.
11 The wholesome one had a terraced nourishing body [lit:vineyard] at the possession of abundance;
He gave orders to keepers [watchmen] about the nourishing terrace ;
Everyone was to go in for it’s nourishment
Numerous longings.
12 My own terraced nourishment is in front [fig speaking] of me.
You wholeness is multiplied,
And those who tend it’s produce multiplication too.
13 You who abide [fig:sit down] in the enclosed protection,
the united are attentive to your sound —
Let me listen and obey the sound!
14 Make extension, my beloved,
And be beauty and honour
Or a earthly power
On the protruding up of the cut up sweet aroma.
